Student Government to Create Stronger Consistency Through Events Committee

01/28/2017  One of the tenure goals of Student Government Association (SGA) President Hamze “Leo” Sukkar was the creation of a new Events Committee tasked with planning, organizing, and advertising regular events branded as SGA programs. A seemingly universal agreement among SGA’s executive board last fall semester was that such a task could not realistically be delegated to a single person; a full-fledged committee is necessary in order to more effectively generate strong, consistent events. Thus, with an approved constitutional amendment creating a dedicated events committee, all that was missing was a chair to lead this committee. Luckily, SGA would not have to look far to find a willing candidate. (more…)

Student Government Association Extends Reach into Local Volunteering

01/20/2017  You would be forgiven for believing that the Illinois Tech Student Government Association (SGA) only concerns itself with projects centered around our campus and student organizations. In fact, it is true that the recently revived coverage of SGA in TechNews thus far has only covered SGA developments that are immediately relevant to Illinois Tech students, such as creating a universal course syllabus library or the expanding role of Judicial Board in student organization affairs. However, the Communication Committee, under Vice President Jelani Canty, is looking to take SGA into the next level of involvement- volunteering with the local community. (more…)

SGA Judicial Board Operates as Organization Arbitrator

11/18/2016  Thus far, coverage of the Illinois Institute of Technology Student Government Association (SGA) has focused on the four main committees of the Senate- Academic Affairs, Communications, Events, and Student Life. As prior articles have exemplified, these four committees serve the needs of the student body by creating projects and assigning senators to carry them out. However, the Senate is only one third of the Student Government Association body. Somewhat less visible than the individual senators, SGA’s Finance Board and Judicial Board are both still equally vital parts of the association’s operations. Specifically, Judicial Board stands as an intermediary for any potential issues that may arise both between student organizations and Finance Board in terms of funding allocations and between the general student body and SGA as a whole. In addition, the last SGA Senate hearing this past Wednesday affirmed a new amendment to the SGA constitution that will allow the Judicial Board, with proper permission, to act as an arbitrator passing final judgment on conflicts within an individual organization. SGA Communications Committee Looks to Updating Organization Website

11/11/2016  Perhaps the unsung heroes of Student Government Association (SGA), the Communications Committee of SGA, under the leadership of Vice-President Jelani Canty, takes it upon themselves to ensure that knowledge of the organization is disseminated to the student body through any and all manners possible. From both within and outside the organization, one of the most cited complaints regarding the Illinois Tech Student Government Association is a lack of readily visible transparency in both its actions and members. Thus, an overarching theme of projects within the Communications Committee is to bridge the perceived gap between the general student body and SGA. Ongoing projects such as facilitating an SGA liaison for every student organization to a possible weekly radio show for SGA updates, the Communications Committee works behind the scenes of the organization’s operations to promote visibility and accessibility. These potential projects are just among many ideas floating around the committee achieve these overarching goals. However, one item of recent focus is the outdated status of the SGA website. Working with Canty, Communications Committee Senators Nathan Jones, David Sobel, and Kislay Bhagat are all working towards extending the reach of SGA to the digital forefront. (more…)
