Student Government

together

What is the SGA?

As the governing student body of IIT, SGA's role is to act as a liaison between the university administration and the student body and to serve as a forum to express student opinion. In addition, SGA provides certain services to student organizations such as official recognition and distribution of funds.

What does SGA do around campus?

SGA provides opportunities to develop your leadership skills by offering a leadership and student organization conference in the fall, as well as a year-long freshman leadership experience called Hawkeyes; SGA sends its leaders to COSGA, a national student government conference; SGA provides opportunities for students to interact with members of the administration, such as the Dean of Students and various Vice Presidents; SGA represents students and their opinions to improve academic and student life at IIT.

So how do I get involved?

Any student may be part of the General Assembly. These meetings provide an avenue to directly interact and engage in conversation with the University administration and to understand what is currently going on in SGA. Any student may also join a Senate committee, in the area of Student Life, Academic Affairs, and Public Relations. Students may run for an elected office, in the Senate or to be a part of the Executive Board. Senate members represent individuals of their respective college and are part of the primary legislative body of the SGA. Members of the Executive Board lead the operation of Student Government, chair committees, and engage with University administrators to help bring about change. Students may be appointed or nominated for the Finance Committee, Judicial Board, or special committees. All of these opportunities provide an opportunity to make a real difference at IIT. SGA is looking for any motivated students who want to make an impact. No experience is required—just the desire to get involved and make a difference!
